During the Easter period, in Barrea, Holy Saturday the “Living Passion” is organized, which traces the main stages of the Passion with costumed figures and a suggestive soundtrack.
In the summer period, in Barrea, numerous cultural events ranging from theater to concerts and festivals (that of the “orapi” is a local species of wild mountain spinach).
Celebrations of the patron saints
In Barrea, the celebrations of the patron saints – San Tommaso apostolo in June, the Madonna delle Grazie in August – are celebrated with processions composed by the brotherhoods, in traditional clothes and with ancient statues of saints.
During the Christmas period, in Barrea, a characteristic nativity scene is set up by the artisans of the town in the cellars of an ancient building in Piazza Umberto I. The scenes reproduced, with human and animal figures made of papier-mâché and natural size, mixed environments of peasant life with images and symbols of the nativity.
